Birmingham Pride 2001

Always held over the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May, it's the UK's first of many annual gay celebrations. Whatever these events are called; whether it be Pride, Mardi Gras or Gayfest; they are there to bring gay people together and unite to enjoy the benefits of homosexuality and help establish a stronger community instead of living in shame or with-in a closet.

I wouldn't change being gay for the world, their is nothing wrong with it and to be honest I find it difficult to understand why people find the opposite sex attractive. However this basic fact also points out to me how anti-gay people may think and the concept of how section 28 of the English law system was brought into effect. If you are 100% straight and didn't have an open mind I could see how it would be difficult to understand the concept of homosexuality and be able to accept it as a way of life. Let's hope equality for all weather you be gay, straight or bi-sexual is implemented into the law system sooner rather than later.

Anyway enough of the political stuff and down to the fun side. To put it bluntly the Birmingham Pride weekend was fantastic, lots to do, lots to see and lots of sexy boys to meet. The main day was on the Sunday, starting at lunchtime with a flamboyant carnival style parade through the city centre. I think the best eye catching float had to go to the Nightingale with its combination of sexy boys in fluffy colourful costumes, stilt walkers and a good roaring sound system.

My friend and I were on the `Angels Café Bar` float - an open top jeep. We were dressed as a couple of angle boys with our drag queen friend Twiggy. Whether we passed it off as angles I don't know, but we did have a great time and got to wink and wave to the straight boys as the parade winded its way around the centre. Great fun!

The rest of the day was spent catching up with friends around the gay village and watching the entertainment on stage. The clubs in the evening were packed, after finishing our gogo sets in Wild Fruit we headed over to the Nightingale to find the place still rammed at 3am.
