Circuit Festival 2008 – Barcelona, Spain

Web site: www.CircuitFestival.net

Date: 4-11 August 2008

Just a 2 hour flight south of London is the second largest city of Spain. Barcelona is a city with beautiful architecture and an amazing Cathedral Sagrada Familia. The gay area is called L'Eixample (Eixample is pronounced eye-sham-play). The gay scene is lively and there's plenty of variety. Everything you'd expect from a major city's gay scene but with the added bonus of bronzed Spanish boys all over the place. But remember in Spain you don't go out to eat until 10pm, the bars don't get going until midnight and the discos don't even open until 3am, so get some sleep in before you go out because you will be out all night drooling over those gorgeous Catalonian boys.

There are lots of musiums and attractions to visit during the day; to start we’d recommend an open top bus ride on your first day to get yourself orientated. The most popular thing to do during the day is to hang out on the beach. There are a lot of beaches to choose from, the two main gay ones are: Mar Bella & San Sebastian

Large circuit parties are usually associated with North America, but not any more. For one week at the beginning of August this year (2008), the Spanish superclub Matinee held its first annual Circuit Festival. Wow what an amazing week it turned out to be. From Monday 4th August till Monday 11th August there were special parties and daytime events to keep us entertained all week.

The most unique event, and our personal favourite party, was the first ever gay day at Illa Fantasia Water Park (on the Friday). The whole water park was closed to the public and turned into a gay wonderland of speedo clad party boys. The main stage was set over the main pool with DJ’s J.Louis, Iordee and Taito Tikaro spinning the tunes. Singing his hit song “Shine On Me” Clarence took to the stage along with forty buff gogo boys (yes 40) in their Matinee swim trunks and truly looked fabulous. Then after the sun set, a spectacular fireworks display to finish off the day.

The main event was on the Saturday with a massive Matinee party at the Olympic Basketball Stadium (Pabellon Olimpico de Badalona). DJ’s Peter Rauhofer, David Penn and Toni Bass; Live Acts by Ultra Nate, Coco Star and Luca G. All this along with gogo boys dressed in American Football gear made the event totally unforgettable.

Although this was the first ever Circuit Festival, all the parties were full, the boys were hot and music was magical. It’s an event we’ll be putting in my diary for next year and would recommend you do too. Circuit Festival is the new Mega European event that overshadows everything else; it’s an event not to be missed! What is a circuit Party?

A circuit party is a mega dance event, extending through a night and into the following day, almost always with a number of affiliated events in the days leading up to and following the main event. Circuit parties were first developed in connection with the early tea dances attended by a subset of gay men, and theme parties held on Fire Island, in the days after police abuse and before the beginning of the health crisis of HIV/AIDS. They came to resemble underground rave parties in some respects, but differ in that circuit parties are highly publicized and professionally produced, and tend to attract people from a wider age range and a broader geographic area.

While open to anyone, the parties generally are viewed as social events for gay men. Circuit parties charge admission, with some being run for-profit and others benefiting charities. Circuit parties are typically lavish affairs with elaborate lighting, music, and decor and are held in venues that can accommodate large crowds. Some of the larger circuit parties are the White Party in Palm Springs, the Black and Blue Party in Montreal, and the Winter Party in Miami, each of which attracts attendees in the thousands to tens of thousands.

Attending more than one party per year, due to a variety of factors such as differing locations, can be rather expensive. Even the most dedicated party-goers don't attempt to run the whole "circuit" - there are simply too many parties to make this possible. Gay men who are regular attendees at multiple circuit parties are sometimes referred to as “circuit boys”.

Circuit parties are known to attract a broad range of demographics, from young gay men in their early 20's to those in their 40s, 50s and even 60s, and both single gay men and couples in long-term relationships. The parties are described by attendees as very important social events, analogous to a major holiday for the gay community. They can be described as a "celebration" of gay life and gay sexuality, an expression of freedom, and as a statement of the power and strength of the gay community. Circuit parties frequently host celebrity performers or headliners, usually gay icons.
