Like everything in life, the Euro Gay Ski Week has evolved into what it is today. Each year getting bigger, better organised and with new events and idea's. Held annually at the end of March; the French ski resort of Alpe d'Huez was this years choice of destination. It attracted about 1,000 people, about 800 event party pass's were sold plus about another 200 people who just wanted to ski.
On our first day of skiing the snow was noticeably thinning on the lower slopes, but by lunchtime it started snowing heavy, I think about 2 inches must have come down just during lunch alone. It stayed this way all afternoon and a heavy dump over night. In the morning it was beautiful, fresh deep powder with blue sunny sky's, just amazing. My snowboard group was up early and ready to play. We timed it just right, just as they had finished the avalanche blasting, we were first on the Marmottes 3 lift to take us to the top. We were all buzzing, quickly strapped on our boards and surfed the untouched fresh snow around the Herpie region of Pic Blanc (3330m high). It was truly amazing, wow burning those leg muscles was so much fun. Special thanks to our maintain guide Chris Hamilton who did a fantastic job. The only downside for the day is that I forgot to apply sun-block and ended up with a face like a skinned tomato for the rest of the week.
The biggest problem with the ski week is just finding enough time to sleep. From the early morning starts for breakfast and skiing, lunch, more skiing, aprés ski, dinner, cabaret, main party, afterhours party and Heidiliscious chill-outs. You need another holiday to recover after this one.
From all the parties throughout the week, 3 of them were voted amongst the best:
1) Aprés Ski (especially on the last day) - After a hard days skiing everyone gathered at the daily Aprés Ski to party as the sun went down. Trumpetman Gorden Edge has a truly exceptional talent, combining the totally unique DJ experience of 3 deck mixing while adding his own personal edge playing a live trumpet. He teamed up with the amazing MC vocalist Tonnic to create an atmosphere to match last years Folie Douce. The atmosphere was brilliant.
2) White Party Snow Ball - This was the biggest party of the week and the signature event of the European Gay Ski Week. Held in the Alpe d'Huez Congress Centre, the massive venue was transformed into a white wonderland. Everyone came dressed in a wacky white costume and danced to music from Steven Redant, Lady Alexandra and Benji de la House. A great night to remember.
3) Pool Party sponsored by ES swimwear - The Alpe d'Huez indoor swimming pool was lazered and lit up with disco grear, with DJ Leomeo playing his funky house. The sight of hundreds of sexy speedo clad boys dancing about provided all the eye candy entertainment while inflatable toys entertained the boys in the pool. Real "speedo police" patrolled the venue banning any trunks that were too baggy, they had to be small and stretched tight (some funny French law). The lifeguards on duty were clearly shocked by the whole event, not just the shenanigans in the showers, but when the lockers were all full and a big queue of boys outside wanting to get in, someone told them "don't worry we are not here to swim".
Other popular events were London's Lovechild and Trade, Crazyvores from Paris, Bear Necessity from Amsterdam, LaDiva Live, Miss Kimberly, male strip shows, Topping & Butch, and the lesbian party Primanotte. Also I'd like to say thanks to the other great DJ's that haven't been mentioned above. DJ's: Paul Heron, Pagano, Alessandro Londra, Lady Bianca, DJ RV and a Lovechild PA by Lizzie France. Plus of course the amazing drag queens Heidiliscious, Andromeda and D'or.
Special thanks to all the hard work of event organisers Kevin Millins and Olivier Paria. Next years event is already in planning, to find out more info log onto: www.EuropeanGaySkiWeek.com
