Madrid Pride 2012  /  Orgullo Madrid 2012

Gay Pride (Orgullo in Spanish) in Madrid is one of the biggest and most popular prides in Europe.

This year it was held 1 week earlier so not to clash with the special London World Pride in England.

The parade is attended by over 1 million people every year and the street parties at Plaza Chueca attract 300K people.

This years theme was "Equal marriage: equality without cuts".

The Saturday of gay pride weekend features a massive parade through the city center with dozens of trucks. The parade starts at 6pm from Puerta de Alcalá and travels down the Gran Via to Plaza de España, which is about 2 km. The outdoor festival then continues till 2am with several music dance area's.

Most English or American parades keep spectators behind barriers, this one was just one big party, slowly moving along the parade route at snails pace. It was very similar to Sao Paulo Pride in Brazil. Big sound trucks lashed out the music and everyone just partied around them as they slowing rolled down the street.

The main night party is called Infinita and held at the massive Madrid Arena. They sure know how to put on a impressive party!

Other big parties from WE and SuperMartXe were also held over the weekend.

Chueca is Madrid's gay area, with lots of shops, restaurants, bars and sauna's catering the gay visitor. This is also a great area to stay as its in the centre of the city and next to the Gran Via. Check out this map of gay venues.

A good hotel near Chueca is the 4* Lusso Infantas. Room Mate Óscar is a cheaper option and right next to Plaza de Chueca. For more hotels check out these budget / mid-range and luxury options.
