Rio de Janeiro - gay Brazil Xmas & New Year 2003/2004

This was my second trip to Rio in just 9 months; it’s a fantastic beautiful city and the boys are hot! The first time I went was for the carnival in February 2003. The other big occasion in Rio is New Year. It’s a special time because it was back on the 1^st January in 1502 that Portuguese navigators first discovered the area. They mistook the entrance of Guanabara Bay for the mouth of a river (Rio) and so named it Rio de Janeiro (River of January).

On New Year’s eve spectacular parties and fireworks displays are held on all of Rio’s major beach’s, with the biggest along Copacabana Beach. Everyone wears white, it’s an incredible event. There aren’t many big parties to pay to go to because there are these big free ones along the beach’s. Party promoters hold circuit style gay parties either just before or just after NY. X-Demente, Bitch, Revolution, Pride and Cine Ideal are the 5 main big promoters out there. Then there is the usual Le Boy and also Salvation (from London) held a very good New Year party for the first time this year.

The most famous beach in Rio is Copacabana Beach; I believe there is small gay area just in front of the Copacabana Palace Hotel. The main gay beach of Rio is located across from the street called Farme de Amoedo on Ipanema Beach; look out for the rainbow flags. Ipanema Beach attracts a lot more of the fashionable, trendy people than the touristy, family orientated beach of Copacabana.

There are various gay bars dotted about the Ipanema and Copacabana area’s of Rio. Pick up one of the free gay map guides from any of the venues or log onto RioGayGuide.com for location details. Cenacarioca.com.br is a great web site for party listings, but unfortunately isn’t translated to English (use Google to translate it for you). Le Boy is the main gay club, located at 102 Raul Pompéia. It’s got a good layout with a sauna upstairs if you’re in a horny mood. Sexy gogo boys entertain the bar tops and either strippers, cabaret or drag entertainment on stage most evenings.

If you’ve never been to Rio and want a good hotel central, I’d recommend the Ipanema Plaza its located right next to the gay beach and has a sauna & swimming pool on the roof, with spectacular views of Rio. It’s not a gay hotel, but because of its location, has a lot of gay guests, particularly over the busy New Year and Carnival periods.
